What you need to know
It is important to have HIGH LEARNING EXPECTATIONS for children who have MCAD. Encourage use of the core educational curriculum and modify it in order to meet the individual needs of the child.
Good communication between parents, doctors, and school personnel is very important.
If an individual with classic MCAD or any other FAOD has an acute metabolic event that leads to a brain injury, they may have secondary academic consequences, such as:
- Loss of developmental milestones
- Acquiring aphasia (an impairment in language ability)
- Attention deficit disorder
What you can do
- Consider a 504 Plan for diet and/or gym class, if needed.
